This is not a traditional song.

A group of Tibetan girls, the Achak, are singing, and they express everything, the singing, the dancing, etc., in a more modern style and make us understand how we must work with circumstances. The circumstances are that we are living in time and that time changes, it does not remain how it was in ancient times. This is the case everywhere in the world, not just in Tibet. So, they have prepared many songs and dances, but even though they are expressed in a modern way, they have not lost the feelings and characteristics of Tibet. We should go that way and develop in that manner.

The meaning is a bit like this: when I look up there are snowy white mountains. When I look down there are valleys covered with flowers. We young Tibetan girls are like the flowers in this place. They repeat it. We Tibetan girls of our generation always have happy faces. It is true, we are happy and also pretty like flowers.

When I look over there, there is an unattractive young man. When I look here, there is a handsome and elegant one. But we Tibetan girls are an ornament of all the men, in character. This means that they don’t distinguish, ‘this is good, this is bad’. This is the idea. It is really a good education, particularly for some places in the Western world. Then they repeat it in a slightly different way but the substance is this. We are an ornament of all males, of men, it does not matter whether they are handsome or ugly, it is not that I choose ‘not him’. It does not mean that there is not any difference, but there is not the idea of being extremist. There is respect for the males.

When I look up there are lovely snowy mountains,

when I look down there are lovely green pastures.

How is the condition of us young Tibetan women?

སྤང་~ སྔོ་ལང་ སྟེང་~ གི་~ མེ་~ ཏོག་ཅིག་ ཡིན།
baŋ~ ŋò-jáŋ deŋ~ gi~ me~ dog-jig yin
Like the flowers in the green pastures. They repeat this idea two times.

have a good disposition in the character of our ethnic group: we are happy and lovely, like flowers.

‘ya ya ya’ means ha ha ha! 
gyid-bo red: happy

སྐེ་~ གཟུགས་~ ཡག་~ ལ་~ མེ་ ~ཏོག་ རེད་།
gye~ súg~ yag~ la~ me ~dog red
gye-súg yag: is lovely, pretty
me-dog red: flower
When they say: ‘me-dog reeed’ (long) it means that beauty is not lacking. Then there is ‘qa-lug zèees’ which means that the shape, the presentation, everything is attractive.

The first verse says, “when I look up and down”.
The second:

ངས་~ ཕར་བལྟས་ ཕོ་ ~སར་ནི་ སྡུག་~ པོ་ཞིག་ ཡོད།
ŋas~ par-das po ~sar-ni dúg ~bo-xĭg yod
ŋas par-das: when I look there, from over there
po-sar: a young man
‘dúg-bo’ means that he is not good, he is not really bad, but he is not good.
When I look there, there is a young man who is not very handsome.

ངས་~ ཚུར་བལྟས་ ཕོ་ ~སར་ནི་ སྣང་~ སྤོ་ཞིག་ ཡོད།
ŋas~ cur-das po ~sar-ni nàŋ~dro-xĭg yod
nàŋ-dro: cheerful, a pleasant appearance
When I look here, there is a handsome and elegant young man.

raŋ-xis: character, our Tibetan girls’ character

སྟག་~ ཤ་རིའི་ སེམས་~ ཀི་~ རྒྱན་~ ཆ་~ ཡིན།
dag~ xa-rii sem~ gyĭ~ gyán~ qa ~ yin
sem-gyĭ gyán-qa: means like an ornament of a young man’s mind.

The character of us Tibetan girls is that we are always the ornament of all young men’s minds.

ང་~ ཚོ་~ རང་གི་ རིགས་ལ་~ གཤིས་~ རྒྱུད་~ བཟང་ ~ པོ་~ ཡོད།
ŋa~ co~ raŋ-gi rig-la xìs~ gyúd~ sáŋ ~ bo yod
Our character is really a good character,

རེད་~ རེད་~རེད། རྒྱན་ ~ ཆ་ རེད།
red~ red~red gyán ~ qa red
red red red: really, truly
gyán-qa red: we are like ornaments for all men

གཤིས་~ ཁ་~ ཡག་~ ལ་~ ཆ་ ~ལུགས་ མཛེས་།
xìs~ka yag~la qa ~lug zès
xìs-ka yag-la: is a good character
qa-lug zès: a nice costume, how the form appears

Then she starts to rap, but nobody is capable of repeating it. It is better to listen.
Then it is the same as the first: we Tibetans girls, the smile of happiness is in the character of our people. We are happy and lovely like flowers. We are like an ornament.

At the end it repeats: “When I look here I see a not-so-great boy, there I see a cheerful one.”

The character of Tibetan girls is always like an ornament of the men’s mind.

    When we look here, we see a handsome young man,

        ང་~ བོད་པའི་ བུ་~  མོའི་~ རང་~ གཤིས་~ འདི་ནི་

        ŋa~  bŏd-bai   bŭ~  moi~  raŋ~ xis~  dì-ni

        But the real character of us Tibetan girls

            སྟག་~ ཤ་རིའི་ སེམས་~ ཀྱི་~ རྒྱན་~ ཆ་ད་~ ཡིན།

               dag~  xa-rii   sem~ gyi~  gyán~ qa-do~  yin.

            Is to be an ornament of all young men’s minds.
