Chögyal Namkhai Norbu about the song
The singer is from Golog, and is very good. There are many good singers, but some of them, such as this one, have always dedicated themselves to Tibetan culture, to Tibet, etc. This song is very beautiful and interesting. In its true sense, it is a kind of prayer. Its significance is linked to the four elements: earth, water, fire, and air. In very ancient times, in the Bön tradition, the elements were represented using figures of animals. This tradition was also used later in Buddhism, when Guru Padmasambhava arrived. You can see, for example, in the lungta that we now use, lungta is used to bring fortune. At the four corners there are four animals: these are symbols of the four elements. So we are actually saying a type of prayer for increasing the potentiality of the elements, and this brings good fortune to Tibetans. With this good fortune they are able to obtain their desires, what they wish. Firstly, there is the tiger. The song explains how it appears, how it will be victorious, and how through this victory Tibetans will be able to obtain all their desires. Then there is the snow lion, the garuda, and the dragon, the symbolic animals on the lungta. We have to sing this song a bit more because it isn’t easy. It is fast and so we have to train a bit, but if you read quickly and repeat it many times, it isn’t difficult. ཨེ་~མ་ ལྷ་ ~རྒྱལ་ལོ ~ ། e~ma lha ~ gyál-lo ~ e-ma: wonderful, in Sanskrit lha gyál-lo: Live on! Long live the divinity or long live positive things! རྒྱ་ ~སྟག་ དམར་~པོས་ མཆུ་~ལྡེར་ ངོམས་ ~སོང་། gyá ~dag már~bos qù~dér ŋom ~soŋ gyá-dag: a male tiger, elegant, not just any tiger már-bos: red, a reddish-yellow red, it’s a way of saying qù: a mouth, but not a closed mouth, a mouth that shows teeth, powerful dér: claws ŋom-soŋ: show This means that it is a very active tiger, not a sleepy one. It is very active. This represents the air element, because the tiger lives in the forest and there are trees in the forest. In astrology, the term ‘wood’ is used for the air element. དཔའ་~བོ་ རལ་ ~དྲུག་ འཛོམས་~སོང ~། ba~vo zal ~drǔg zòm soŋ ba-vo: heroic, strong zal-drǔg: a way of saying, there is also the explanation of the six capacities of animals, such as jumping, etc. They are called the six qualifications of energy. zòm-soŋ: perfected The six qualifications of energy are perfected. In general when an animal is very strong, it has to have these six qualifications. With these potentialities it also manifests its stripes. Then these verses repeat what was just said: that it shows all its po- tentiality, that all six strengths are perfected, and that all its stripes are wonderful. This means that the tiger, one of the five elements, is very strong, and with this power automatically perfects all the desires of the Tibetans. This is repeated two times. You see what kind of tiger this is, and it isn’t a weak tiger. རལ་~ དྲུག་~ རི་ ~ མོ་ མཛེས་ ~སོང་། zal~ drǔg~ ri ~mo zès~soŋ ri-mo: patterns, stripes zès-soŋ: appear beautiful བོད་~མིའི་ བསམ་དོན་ ལྷུན་གིས་ འགྲུབ།~ འགྲུབ། bǒd~mii sàm-dǒn lhun-gyĭs drùb~ drùb bǒd-mii: of Tibetans sàm-dǒn: desire, wish lhun-gyĭs drùb: self-perfected, that all desires manifest without effort. Because these are lungta, when there are lungta, it is like that. Then comes the lion, symbol of the earth element. གངས་ ~ སེང་ དཀར་~མོས་ གད་~རྒྱང་ སྒོགས་ ~སོང་། gǎŋ ~seŋ gar~mos gǎd~gyáŋ dróg ~soŋ gǎŋ-sen: snow lion gar-mos: white, female gǎd-gyáŋ: roar dróg-soŋ: has proclaimed སེང་~ལ་ གཡུ་ ~རལ་ རྒྱས་~སོང ~ ། seŋ~la yú ~ral gyás soŋ ~ seŋ-la: snow lion yú-ral: greenish-turquoise mane gyás: develops གངས་~ ལ་~ གཟི་ ~ མདངས་ ཆགས་ ~སོང་། gǎŋ~ la~ zí ~dàŋ qag~soŋ gǎŋ-la: for the snow mountain zí-dàŋ: elegance qag-soŋ: possessing The lion roars and when it roars all animals obey. The Tibetan snow lion is always drawn with a greenish-turquoise mane and here the mane is abundant. With its potentiality, the snow shines and manifests. Live on! Then it repeats that it roars, that it has an abundant mane, that it manifests wonderfully, and that with this potentiality, Tibetans will automatically obtain all their desires. Then there is the garuda. བྱ་ ~ རྒྱལ་ ཁྱུང་~གིས་ གཤོག~འགྱུར་ ངོམས་ ~སོང་། jyǎ ~gyál kyuŋ~gis xòg~jyùr ŋom ~soŋ jyǎ-gyál: king of birds kyuŋ-gis: from the garuda xòg-jyùr: gliding ŋom-soŋ: shows, displays གཤོག་ ~ རལ་ དགུང་ ~ལ་ ངོམས་~སོང ~། xòg~zal gúŋ ~la ŋom soŋ xòg-zal: the ability of flight gúŋ-la: in space ŋom-soŋ: shows, displays དགུང་ ~ སྔོན་~ ཕ་ ~ མཐའ་ བཅད་~སོང་། gúŋ ~ ŋòn~ pa ~tà jad ~soŋ gúŋ-ŋòn: in blue space, that is in the sky pa-tà: up to its very end, that is distant jad-soŋ: gone The garuda is the symbol of the fire element. It is said that it perfectly manifests the power to take off or fly and doesn’t show weakness. In the dimension of space, it is really capable of arriving at the very end of space, the very edge of the sky. All of its actions manifest already perfected. With this power, Tibetans will obtain all their desires. Then there is the dragon. གཡུ་ ~ འབྲུག་ སྔོན་~མོ་ ལྷང་~ལྷང་ ལྡིར་ ~བྱུང་། yú ~drùg ŋòn~mo lhaŋ~lhaŋ dír ~jyǔŋ yú-drùg: the turquoise dragon ŋòn-mo: this means always blue, female lhaŋ-lhaŋ: sound, a way to hear this sound dír-jyǔŋ: this means ‘drrr’, the kind of sound that it makes སྦྲང་~ཆར་ སིམ་ ~ སིམ་ འབབས་~བྱུང ~། dráŋ~qar sim~sim bàb ~ jyǔŋ dráŋ-qar: a light rain sim-sim: a way of falling bàb: that falls, descends འཇའ་~ འོད་~ གུར་ ~ ཁང་ ཕུབ་ ~སོང་། jà ~ hǒd~ gǔr ~kaŋ pub ~soŋ jà-hǒd: light and rainbows gǔr-kaŋ: dimension, a rainbow makes its dimension pub: show, display The dragon is a symbol of thunder, and of all sounds that are linked historically to the dragon. When spring begins, one hears thunderstorms. Live on! When this happens, rain falls, and rain is very important for nature, for maturing and for life. And rainbows, lights, and colours appear everywhere. Then it repeats: thunder, rain, and rainbows appear, which are all typical manifestations of the dragon. These are the four elements linked with the lungta, and these are the four animals on the lúŋ-da, so I find this song to be almost like a prayer. It is a song, but it’s a song that has this function, if we understand its meaning when we sing it.
