The Fortune of the World

Golog group

Autoplay

This is a song from Golok, a very nice tashi.

'Jìg-den' refers to the world we live in; it can also mean dimension, any kind of dimension. For example, we can also talk about the 'jìg-den' of animals, or their dimension. It is a word used more in a literary way. What does the title mean? 'Jìg' means impermanent, perishable, something that finishes one day, not something stable like a paradise or a pure dimension. 'Den' means possessing that kind of dimension. Then we have ngo and cho: ngo refers to this dimension and cho to the beings in this dimension, both of which are impermanent. Tashi is the fortune of the 'jìg-den' of this dimension.

jìg~den~ xar~gyi~ qyog~la dra~la~xis~~~.
This tashi is connected to the four directions.
jìg-den xar-gyi qyog: the East ('shar') part of the 'jìg-den'
dra-la-xis: brings fortune to that dimension.

xar~qyog~ ñi~ma ser~bo dra~la~xis~~~.
xar-qyog: in the East
ñi-ma: the sun; the sun shines in the East
ser-bo: yellow
dra-la-xis: it also brings fortune.

dra~xis ñi~ma~ sèr~gyĭ ka~xǎg drà~~~,
ta-shi ñi-ma: the sun of fortune
ser: means yellow just like gold
ka-xǎg: for example, when all the fat rises to the top of the soup, this is 'ka-xǎg'. Or when you put some tea in a cup and add just a little butter, the butter remains on the surface, this is 'ka-xǎg'.
ser-gyĭ: of gold
drà: similar.
'Ta-shi ñi-ma', the sun of fortune, manifests golden like the 'ka-xǎg'.

sèr~gyĭ ka~xǎg jìg~den yáŋ~la qag.
This golden 'ka-xǎg' is ('yáŋ-la qag') just like the prosperity of our world or dimension.

na~co yú~yi bad~dán drà.
ŋa-co: means we - 'ŋa' means me or I, 'co' is plural
yú: turquoise
bad-dán drà: like a base, or an ornament. When we have something like a flower the base is made of turquoise. We are like the 'bad-dán', the base or seat of turquoise.

bad~dán~ gyùr~va mi~náŋ a~ le~ ho~~~.
This base of turquoise that we have does not change or is not modified, it is always stable ('gyùr-va mi-náŋ').
a-le-ho: means it is wonderful, fantastic.

sò~ ya~ la~ sò~, ya~la~ni sò.
This is just an ornament.

This first verse refers to the East direction.

jìg~den~ lho~yi~ qyog~la dra~la~xis~~~.
The world in the South ('lho-yi qyog'). This is always combined with two aspects: the dimension - such as the East, South, North and West in our dimension of the world, and the position of the place. For instance, many years ago when we started to look for a place for the Dzogchen Community, we went around searching for months and months, but we could not find a place easily. Why? Because we were searching for a place that not only looked nice but also had to have certain characteristics. It had to be open in the East; have something rich and abundant in the South, such as a forest or a mountain; the West had to be far away, and it had to be closed in the North. We needed a place like that because in that way it would bring fortune to the people living there. If the West is far away then people living there can have a longer life. If the East is open, not closed, then the family income is much better. If the North is closed, it is not easy to receive negativities. There are many books that we can study about these things.

In this song the examples are connected with those principles. But they do not speak only of a small place, but of 'jig-ten', the world so there is a double meaning and this is important to know.

lho-yi qyog-la dra-la-xis: the South also brings fortune

lho~qyog~ drin~ba~ gar~bo dra~la~xis~~~.
lho-qyog: in the South
drin-ba gar-bo: white clouds
dra-la-xis: bring fortune.
It does not mean that white clouds bring fortune in themselves, but rather the form in which these clouds manifest.

dra~xis drin~ba~ ŋúl~gyĭ bǔm~ba drà~~~,
The white cloud that brings fortune looks like a silver vase ('ŋúl-gyĭ bǔm-ba drà'). This is how it manifests in the South.

ŋúl~gyĭ bǔm~ba~ jìg~den yáŋ~la qag.
This cloud that looks like a vase brings fortune to this place.

na~co xel~gyĭ me~dog drà.
ŋaco: we, who live in that dimension
xel-gyĭ me-dog drà: are just like flowers of crystal ('xel'), very pure, clear and limpid

me~dog~ gyùr~va~ mi~náŋ~
We are like crystal flowers, and this situation remains stable and does not change tomorrow.

a~ le~ ho~~~.
This is fantastic.

jìg~den~ nub~gyi~ qyog~la dra~la~xis~~~.
Now we go to the West. The West side of the world brings fortune.

nub~qyog~ dá~va~ gar~bo dra~la~xis~~~.
dá-va gar-bo: white moon; moon and sun always set in the evening so we can see very far. What does the moon look like?

dra~xis dá~va~ dǔŋ~gi me~loŋ drà~~~,
It looks like 'dǔŋ-gi me-loŋ drà'.
dǔŋ: a white conch shell
me-loŋ: means mirror and is round.
The moon is round and white.

dǔŋ~gĭ me~loŋ~ jìg~den yáŋ~la qag.
jìg-den yáŋ-la qag: it looks like a mirror of conch-shell, and this also brings fortune.

ŋa~co byǔ~rui jón~ba drà.
We are just like the trunk of a coral tree (we are like the big corals in the ocean).
jón-ba: means trunk. For example, a live tree is called 'jón-ba', but if it is dead and dry it is not 'jón-ba'. 'Jón-ba' means something with life, alive.

jón~ba~ gyùr~va~ mi~náŋ~ a~ le~ ho~~~.
jón-ba mi-náŋ: it does not change or move, it is not modified at all, it is always stable. This brings fortune.
A-le-ho: this is fantastic!

jìg~den~ jyǎŋ~gĭ~ qyog~la dra~la~xis~~.
The last one, the North direction, also brings fortune.

jyǎŋ~qyog~ gǎŋ~ri~ mùg~bo dra~ la~xis~~~.
gǎŋ-ri: snow mountain
mùg-bo: a little dark, brown, so not only snow mountains. This means that geographically the place is not open. There are mountains such as snow mountains, or rocky mountains, thus the North is closed. This brings fortune.

dra~xis gǎŋ~ri~ yáŋ~drii qòd~den drà~~~,
This mountain looks just like a stupa of jade ('yáŋ-dri')

yáŋ~drii qòd~den~ jìg~den yáŋ~la qag.
and this is also part of the manifestation of bringing fortune.

ŋa~co mu~dig qòd~gyán drà.
ŋa-co: we (who are living there)
mu-dig: (are just like) pearls, white, small, and luminous
mu-dig qòd-gyán: ornaments of pearls for offering, just like a mandala offering, or any kind of ornament. We are just like that.

qòd~gyán~ gyùr~va~ mi~náŋ~ a~le~ho~.
We are just like that ornament
gyùr-va: it does not change its place, is sometimes present sometimes not, but stable ('mi-náŋ').
a-le-ho: this is fantastic.

These last two verses are repeated twice.
