Phayul Amdo

Fatherland Amdo

When we are dancing, we are dancing Khaita, not western dances. You are not only jumping, because some people only like jumping. This is not the principle of dance.
Principle of dance, what we are doing with Khaita, there are three arguments, you should remember this:
first argument in Tibetan is dems
dems: means harmonious, all movements harmonious.
This is the number one, it must not be missing.
The second is called gyù
gyù: means movement,
but for example you need to check: if you turn to the right side, you must also turn to the left side, if a movement is high, there must also be a low one etc., all movements in a harmonious way, not only jumping. Some people when are dancing are jumping too much. Maybe it is nice but it doesn’t correspond with the dance.
The last one is called grig
grig: means that you coordinate your body with the music in any kind of movement. Also when you do a circle, for example. You see, most of the people are not following the circle, sometimes the next person in the circle is very far, sometimes near. For that reason when we are doing the dance of ’Gangchenpa’ for example, we always find it difficult. Why? Because there is no 'grig', you are not following, you are not looking where you are, how far is the first person and you, and the next person and you. Because dance is coordinated no? So, you should always remember these three: 'dems, gyù, grig' they are indispensable for dance, not only jumping. You should remember that and coordinate your body and dance.

payul adò

Phayul - ཕ་ཡུལ: means fatherland, the land of your birthplace, this is phayul.
For example, I am living in Italy but it is not my phayul. My phayul is Tibet, I was born there and grew up there.

Amdo: you know already. There are three big regions of Tibet called cholka sum in Tibetan, and one is Amdo. Many dances speak of cholka sum,
cholka: means region
sum: means three "Ü-Tsang or Central Tibet, Kham, and Amdo," these are the three most important Tibetan regions.
This is a characteristic dance of the Amdo country.

When we start with: e~~~~ what does this gesture mean? It means we are reflecting, thinking, it is not ‘hello’. ཡུལ་~འདི་ཆོས་~ཀྱི་ བྱིན་~རླབས་དགའ་~བ་ལ~། yul~dì qos~gyi jyĭnláb gá~va la~!
yul dì: this country, Amdo qos: means dharma jyĭnláb: means blessing, blessing of the dharma in this country, gávala is not a main word. When I write songs I write small letters and big letters: big letters are main point of the song, small letters are for harmonizing, making beauty for the song, but they are not main words. Gávala: is happiness or pleasure. བྱིན་~རླབས་ཆེ་~བའི་གནས་~ཡིན་~ ལགས~། jyĭn~láb qe~vai nás~ yin~ lag~!
jyĭnláb: means blessing qeva: means great blessing possessing this country nás: means country, place. This country which has the big blessing of the dharma. That is very true. གནས་~འདི་ལས་~དང་རྒྱུ་~འབྲས་བདེ་~བའི་ལམ~། nás dì lasdǎŋ gyú~dràs dé~vai lam~!
nás dì: this country las: means karma, good and bad gyú: means cause dràs: means fruit, cause and fruit of the karma. That means that people of this country pay respect of the karma and when they know, that doing this is negative karma, they don’t do it, or, if it is positive, they try to do it. It is not that someone is asking to do it, but in their nature they have this quality, it means this dévai lam: means good path, but is not main word. རྒྱུ་~འབྲས་རྩིས་~པའི་~ཡུལ་~ཡིན་ལགས~། gyú ~dràs zis~bai ~yul ~yin lag~
gyú dràs: cause and effect zisbai: means paying respect. Most people even they know which is cause and which is effect, when they are interested, to do something on their own interest, they don’t pay respect. But this is a country, phayul, where people do pay respect of the cause and effect. This is repeated two times. ལྷ་~བསང་~སྔོན་མོ་~ ལྷོང་~ལྷོང་ ལྷོང་~ལྷོང་འཕྱུར། lha~sàŋ ŋòn~mo~ lhoŋ~lhoŋ lhoŋ~lhoŋ qyùr.
We are singing this a little quicker. lha sàŋ: means when we are doing sang, smoke, for purifying ŋònmo: means blue, because smoke coming out is blue lhoŋ lhoŋ: is a way of manifesting. In Tibetan we have many of this kind of words, adverbs, which we can’t translate precisely. It says how it is manifesting nicely lhoŋ lhoŋ qyùr: means that smoke is coming harmoniously. ལྷོང་~ལྷོང་འཕྱུར་~བའི་~ཁྲོད་~དུ་ཚེ་~གཡང་འདུ། lhoŋ ~lhoŋ gyùr~vai ~tròd~ dù ce~yáŋ dù,
lhoŋ lhoŋ gyùrvai: the manifestation of the smoke tròddù: inside that 'ceyáŋ dù' are small letters ce: means life yáŋ: glory dù: means concentrated All is manifesting that aspect. ཨ་ཕའི་~གདོང་ལས་~དགེ་~བའི~ a pai~dóŋ las~gévai~
apa: means my father. When I call my father I can say apa but I could not call your father apa pa: is father a: we are using always as a very kind way. For example, all people in the gar who were following my teacher Changchub Dorje, always called my teacher 'ala' a: means lama, teacher, but ala: means very close, a very kind way of using words in Tibetan. For example when my teacher Changchub Dorje called me, he always said atul tul: means 'tulku', reincarnation, I have this name He didn’t call me tulku, he said atul. That means very close, near. That is an example. Here apa means that. ama: same way, means my mother ma: means mother. apai dóŋ las: means face of the father gévai: means virtue. དགེ་~བའི་མཆོད་~སྤྲིན་མཐོང་༑ སོང་༑ gé ~vai qòd~drin tòŋ༑ soŋ༑
gévai qòddrin: means offering, something manifesting infinite offerings tòŋ: means seeing, seeing offerings of the virtue. That means: manifesting on the face of the father that he is very happy, something just like offering, wonderful things, manifesting. That is the meaning of: tòŋ soŋ.
Then it is saying: e~~~~ again: reflecting. དམུ་~ཐག་རིང་~མོ་ལྷབ་~ ལྷབ་~ལ~། mú~tag riŋ~mo lhab~lhab la~
mútag: is a very ancient word of the Bönpo tradition, Buddhist don’t use it, but Indian history used. In ancient times in the space there was mú gyal - something like a god or some powerful beings, that is called in ancient Bönpo tradition. Tag: means cord, the cord for going to the gods. So, mútag: means connection riŋmo: means very long, long mútag. It means then it is also manifesting nicely, lhab lhab. lhab lhab: is an adverb, you couldn’t translate it. ལྷབ་~ལྷབ་གཡོ་~བའི་དུས་~སུ་~ལགས~། lhab~lhab yó~vai dǔs~ su~ lag~
yóva: means movement of this mútag dǔs su: means in that moment, when is manifesting that, ཨ་~མའི་མིག་~ལས་མཐོང་~བ་བདེ་~བའི་ ལམ~། a~mai mig~las tòŋ~va dé~vai lam~,
ama: means my mother mig: means eyes, eyes of the mother tòŋva: what is mother seeing? mother also is seeing this fantastic manifestation dévai lam: good way or path, it is not main word. དད་~པའི་མཆི་~མ་ ལྷུང་~ལྷུང་~ལགས~། dǎd~bai qì~ma lhuŋ~ lhuŋ ~ lag~
dǎdba: means faith sensation, or devotion. qìma: means drops coming from the eyes lhuŋ: means falling down. Why? Not because she is feeling sad, she is very happy seeing something fantastic, then tears come out from her eyes. This is repeated two times. མདོ་སྔགས་~བསྟན་པ་~དར་~ས་ ཚེ་~གཡང་~འདུ།་ dò ŋàg ~dan ba~ dǎr~ sa ce~yáŋ dù,
These words we are saying quicker. do: is Sutra ŋàg: is Tantra Tantra and Sutra danba: means teaching dǎr: means spread, spread that teaching sa: means place. Place where Sutra and Tantra teaching are spread ceyáŋ dù: means that there is long life and prosperity, everything manifests. ཕ་ཡུལ་~ཨ་མདོ་~ཡིན་~སོང་ཚེ་~གཡང་འདུ། payul ~adò ~yin ~soŋ ce~yáŋ dù.
This place where the teaching is spread is Amdo, our country. ཨ་ཕའི་~གདོང་ལས་~བདེ་~སྐྱིད་~། a pai ~dóŋ las~ dé ~gyid~ བདེ་~སྐྱིད་~འཚོ་~བ་ མཐོང་༑ སོང་༑ dé~gyid cò~ va tòŋ༑ soŋ༑
Knowing that, on the face of the father dé gyid: happiness còva: life; life of happiness is manifesting on the face of the father. Nice no? Father is happy, mother is happy, everybody is happy, that is the meaning.
e~~~~ Again reflecting. ཡུལ་~འདི་བཀྲ་~ཤིས་རྟགས~་བརྒྱད་~ལགས~། yul~dì dra~xis dag~ gyád~ lag~
draxis: in general is fortune or something similar dag gyád: are the eight signs of bringing fortune. So, this country has that aspect. རྟགས་~བརྒྱད་ཚང་~བའི་གནས་~ཡིན་~ལགས~། dag~ gyád caŋ~vai nás~ yin~ lag~
These eight signs mean the symbols of prosperity caŋvai: possesses completely nás yin: this country. This country has, possesses these auspicious signs. གནས་~འདི་པད་~མ་འདབ་~བརྒྱད་~ལགས~། nás~dì bad~ma dàb ~gyád~ lag~
This place is just like a lotus flower with eight petals. འདབ ~བརྒྱད་ འཛོམས་~པའི་གནས་~ ཡུལ་~ལགས~། dàb~ gyád zòm ~bai nás~ yul ~ lag~
It is also a country which has all these aspects of complete manifestation. མདོ་སྔགས་~བསྟན་པ་~དར་~ས་ཚེ་~གཡང་~འདུ།། dò ŋàg~ danba ~ dǎr~sa ce~yáŋ dù,
Sutra and Tantra: where this kind of teachings has increased, there is also prosperity and everything like above. ཕ་ཡུལ~་ཨ་མདོ་~ཡིན་~སོང་ཚེ་~གཡང་འདུ།། phayul ~adò~ yin ~soŋ ce~yáŋ dù.
That country is Amdo. ལག་ན་~བྱུར་དཀར་~ཕྲེང་~བ་ཚེ་~ཡང་འདུ།། lagna~ gyǔr ~gar ~treŋ ~va ce~yáŋ dù,
lag na: means in your hand gyǔr, gyǔru: means coral gyǔr gar: white coral treŋva: means mala, for chanting mantras. So, when you have this, it also brings fortune or something. ཕྲེང་~བ་འདྲེན་~ས་ཡིན་~སོང་ཚེ་~ཡང་འདུ།། treŋ~va drèn~ sa yin ~soŋ ce~yáŋ dù,
Not only having this kind of mala, but also people use the mala, the counting mala. ཁ་ནས་~ཡིག་དྲུག~་མ་~ཎི་~། ka nas~ yigdrǔg~ ma~ni ~
ka nas: from the mouth yig drǔg: six syllables OM MA NI PAD ME HUM. མ་ ~ཎི་འདོན་~ས་ཡིན་༑ སོང་༑ ma ~ni dòn ~sa yin༑ soŋ༑
This is the place where they chant OM MA NI PAD ME HUM.
e~~~~ Then we are again reflecting a little and saying: བྲོ་~ནས་སྲན་~གསུམ་ལོ་~ལེགས་~ལགས~། drǒ~nas sàn~ sùm~ lo~ leg ~ lag~
drǒ: means green nas: means barley sàn: means beans sum: means three, three main crops lo leg: means when they are planted and grow up perfect way. ལོ་~ལེགས་སྨིན་~པའི་དུས་~སུ་~ལགས~། lo ~leg mìn ~bai dǔs~ su~ lag~

zùm: smiling My mother’s face is smiling. Mother is happy and when someone is happy in general they smile; when they are not happy they do not smile. དགའ་~ སྤྲོའི་ལང་~ཚོ་~ཁོལ་~ཁོལ་~ལགས~། gá ~droi laŋ~co kol ~kol ~lag~.
ga: means happy dro: means also happy, so very happy kol kol: water boiling laŋ co: means then happiness manifestation is just like water boiling, is always manifesting that alive. སྟོབས་འབྱོར་~མངའ་ཐང་~དར་~ས་ཚེ་~ཡང་འདུ།། dob jyòr~ ŋá-taŋ~ dǎr~sa ce~yáŋ dù
dob: means power, potentiality jyòr: means wealthy ŋá taŋ: means having all possibility of having these things dǎrsa: where there is this increased wealthy and potentiality etc. dù: glory. Then there is always life and glory. ཕ་ཡུལ་~ཨ་མདོ་~ཡིན་~སོང་ཚེ་~ཡང་འདུ། pa-yul~ adò ~yin ~soŋ ce~yáŋ dù,
This is the country of Amdo. ཆུང་ཆུང་~འབལ་འབལ་~ལྷ་~བུ་ཚེ་~ཡང་འདུ། quŋ-quŋ~ bàl-bàl ~ lha~ bǔ ce~yáŋ dù,
quŋ-quŋ: small bàl-bàl: means small animals, such as small sheep, small horses etc. all, not only human beings lha bǔ: for the generation of our people, like sons and daughters ceyáŋ dù: when it is progressing there is also fortune. ལུ་~གུ་འཚོ་~ས་ཡིན་~སོང་ཚེ་~ཡང་འདུ། lu~gǔ cò~ sa yin~ soŋ ce~yáŋ dù,
lugǔ: means small sheep, for children, they always go after that cò: young people look after and be with them. This is the country which also has that, because in Amdo country there are many sheep, many animals. ཡང་ཆུང་~སྐལ་བཟང་~མེ་~ཏོག་ཡེ~། yaŋ quŋ~ galsáŋ~ me~dog ye,~
